In 1959, the city fathers were planning the disection of Main Street, one of the major arteries to and from Evansville’s downtown, raze several blocks, and put in the Civic Center complex.

Photograph 1027 is one of twenty aerial views Donahue Studios did of Evansville’s downtown before the massive project began. These images include long-forgotten buildings like Assumption Cathedral, Cook’s Brewery and the C&EI Railroad station. The Four Freedoms pillars, now at the riverfront, came from the C&EI building.
